Rajesh Menon is a software engineer working on Shared Solar. He joined the Earth Institute and Prof. Modi’s lab in the summer of 2010. He has nearly a decade of experience building software, and is responsible for the metering, communications and accounting software of the energy grid controller.
Rajesh started his career as a web developer at ZDNet India where he helped design and build several of the user-facing pages, as well as collaborating with the business and sales teams with promotional campaigns.
Having developed a keen interest in the computer sciences, he took a break from work to get a formal education in it. Soon after, Rajesh helped develop a software product for the healthcare sector, with roles ranging from analyst to engineer and brought it to a state where it saw use within healthcare agencies in Houston.
Rajesh’s next stint was as a product engineer at Ecensity Corp/Quadrant Risk Management. Here, he worked on a web OS for the firm’s presentation server for business and developer teams to build internal resource management dashboards.
Prior to joining the Earth Institute, Rajesh was a technical consultant in the financial services sector at O3 Technologies Inc. He assisted in and headed internal technical projects at O3 while also consulting for several clients like GMAC, FHLB-NY, Nationwide and Aviva.
Rajesh has a keen interest in environmental science/engineering topics and how mankind’s negative impact on it can be lessened/reversed. Coming from a different background, he’s trying to figure out a way in which he can be a part of the movement working towards these goals.
He’s a big proponent of open source software, a fan of Debian, programming language agnostic, and always on the lookout for ways in which software can make our daily tasks easier.
Rajesh earned a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from the University of Mumbai’s Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering and a master’s degree in computer science from New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
Rajesh lives in New York City with his wife Jayeeta and their two cats, Leo and Pele. He can be contacted at rajeshmenon.mrg@gmail.com.
